Diesel market digest: US distillate stocks fall, ARA gasoil builds (week of 16 October 2026)

This week in numbers
  • US distillate stocks: 102.6 million barrels, down 2.5 million barrels week on week (week to 9 October).
  • US distillate product supplied: 4.32 million b/d, up from 3.65 million b/d the week before.
  • ARA gasoil stocks: 13.34 million barrels on average in October so far, up 756,000 barrels (+6%) on the September average.

United States: stocks down, demand up

According to the US Energy Information Administration's Weekly Petroleum Status Report released on 15 October, US distillate fuel inventories fell to 102.611 million barrels in the week ending 9 October, from 105.138 million barrels a week earlier, a draw of about 2.5 million barrels. Distillate product supplied, the EIA's proxy for demand, rose to 4.323 million barrels per day from 3.650 million barrels per day the previous week. Weekly demand figures are volatile, so one strong week is a signal to watch rather than a trend. The next report is due on 21 October.

Europe: ARA gasoil stocks build in October

Independently held gasoil stocks in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp hub, which include diesel and heating oil, have averaged 13.34 million barrels in October so far, up 756,000 barrels or 6% on the September average, according to Insights Global data reported by ENGINE on 16 October. Fuel oil stocks in the hub rose 373,000 barrels to 5.85 million barrels. ENGINE also reported that prompt fuel availability in ARA ports remains tight.

What it means for buyers and sellers

Broker's comment, not investment advice.
  • Buyers planning November and December EN590 deliveries into Europe may find more product in ARA storage than in September, but tight prompt availability means early nomination of loading windows still matters.
  • Sellers with US-origin product should watch whether the drop in US distillate stocks continues; a sustained draw usually firms US Gulf Coast pricing and can reduce the arbitrage to export.
  • For both sides, price offers on a benchmark plus or minus a differential, rather than fixed prices, remain the practical way to handle weekly volatility.
