Fuel oil 380 cSt (ISO 8217 RMG 380)

Fuel oil 380 cSt is a heavy residual fuel with a maximum kinematic viscosity of 380 mm²/s at 50 °C, specified for marine use as grade RMG 380 in ISO 8217. It is used for ship propulsion, power generation and industry.

Sulfur rules

Under MARPOL Annex VI, ships may burn fuel with at most 0.50 % m/m sulfur outside Emission Control Areas (since 1 January 2020) and 0.10 % m/m inside them, unless they use approved exhaust cleaning systems. Source: IMO.

What "D6" means in offers

"D6" in broker offers is often used loosely for an unspecified heavy residual fuel and usually does not refer to fuel certified to ASTM D396 grade No. 6. The defining ASTM D396 No. 6 limits are a viscosity of 15.0 to 50.0 mm²/s at 100 °C, a flash point of at least 60 °C and water and sediment of at most 2.00 % by volume. If an offer says "D6", ask which standard and test results it refers to.
