Gasoil and No. 2 diesel (ASTM D975)

No. 2 diesel is the middle-distillate fuel defined by the American standard ASTM D975, sold mainly as grade No. 2-D S15 (max 15 ppm sulfur) or No. 2-D S500 (max 500 ppm sulfur). In international trade higher-sulfur middle distillates are often offered simply as "gasoil" with a stated sulfur limit, for example gasoil 50 ppm or 500 ppm.

Gasoil vs EN590

EN590 sets a higher minimum cetane number (51) and a sulfur limit of 10 mg/kg, and is required for road use in Europe. No. 2 diesel S15 is the US road equivalent. Higher-sulfur gasoils are used in markets with less strict fuel rules, for power generation and for industrial use. Always state the exact standard, grade and sulfur limit in the offer. See the EN590 product page.
